It was back in 1971 in the city of Nottingham that Tony Hillary fitted his first made-to-measure blind. As a sole trader, Tony was responsible for everything from advertising and selling to manufacturing and fitting, all from the garage of his home.
In those early days, Tony was only able to offer customers Venetian blinds. But with hard work, the business grew and it wasn’t long until he expanded the product range and hired advisors.
After a successful six years, production moved from garage to factory in 1977, with manufacturing facilities opening in Nottingham and Washington, Tyne and Wear. Since then we’ve continued to grow, becoming major employers in both areas.
From our first TV and radio advertising in the mid-nineties, to major TV sponsorships like Homes on 4, we’ve worked hard to get our name out there. And now? We hope you’ve all seen our Winnie the Owl TV ads, voiced by Jennifer Saunders.
We’re always up for a challenge and in 2008 we appeared in the Guinness Book or Records for making the biggest Vertical blind in the world measuring 20.1 metres wide x 8.3 metres high.
In recent years we’ve collaborated with big names in the world of interiors on exclusive collections, from experts like House Beautiful to designers like Abigail Ahern and Poodle & Blonde.
In 2017 we became part of the Hunter Douglas group, a global leader in window coverings and architectural products, which has been innovating since the introduction of the world’s first aluminium blind in 1946.
In 2023 we welcomed our first Head of Environment and Sustainability to the team. Since then, we’ve introduced programs to tackle waste and carbon emissions, and we’re continually improving the sustainable fabric choices for our customers.
